Only the second one I've ever seen. And I'm not saying we raced...but I will confirm that a Phaeton can't speed around and cut off a Mustang
EDIT: "THIS" Phaeton. Engine unconfirmed, although he did try twice.

A unicorn if there ever was one.

What year is your stang?
10?
11?
12?

I can confirm that if it was trying, the Phaeton could (hypothetically) easily cut off a Mustang. These things were ludicrously fast.

If someone is willing to pay for the service and maintenance, I will gladly drive one of those in W12 guise for the rest of my life.

And yet I know which I'd rather have.

I have tried the V12, and its no slouch for a sedan.

I'd rather have an inop Phaeton than the nicest mustang you could find me. The brilliance of the Phaeton wasn't that it was expensive, but that it was cheap. Because VAG was selling the car with the VW logo, the buyer wasn't paying for the recognition of a brand. I'm not saying a Phaeton is as nice as a Bentley, but it sure is hell is a lot closer to a Bentley of the time than the price would suggest. Mad love for a W12 Phaeton.

You forgot the extra V! Its a W12!

The Phaeton basically IS a Bentley.

Probably because he didn't try to speed up and cut off a mustang. Even if a Phaeton was slower than a a Mustang (not too sure it is, especially in W12 guise) I'd rather carve a hole in my head with a saw than trade it for a Mustang.

This is the only one I have seen. I caught this one about 2 months ago:

Well, he tried twice. Also depends on the engine, weren't they available with a 6, 8 and 12 ?

I had the good fortune one night, after driving home a drunken fare (cabbie, at the time) to drop this dude off at his not-too-shabby spot and notice a Phaeton parked out front. It started with me asking, "Is that a W12?" And ended with me taking the car, and his drunk ass, for a "safe" drive around the rural and windy roads out that way.
My impressions were as follows:
It is not fast. It is shockingly not fast. It's so not fast it breaks the fucking sound barrier while you're thinking, "Okay, where's the power?" This car, with the W12, is not an insistent engine. It is calm, it is tempered and it has all the power of Odin The All Father under the bonnet but it will never be Thor, it will never be the hammer.
Fair notice, I own a Mustang too. I've owned more. And yes, the right pony will walk this Phaeton off the line... but that is all. No, seriously, that is all. While you and I, we're going "Ha!" because we think we just pulled a Phaeton, that Vee Dub will just be biding it's time and before you hit sixty, that Bently in disguise will be long motherfucking gone. Gone and away.
It wooshes, and it soothes. The entire point of the car was to be a sedate cyanide pill, perfect in every way and never, ever, ever, ever, ever a boy racer's buddy. Ever. Period. Full stop.
I enjoyed driving it immensely and what I came away with was this; if I ever am in the market, at that price point, it will never be the car I buy. There's no logical reason why not, but there's no insane reason why for either.
Here, I did this thing.

More, in fact. It depended on your market, mostly.
I was shocked, one day, to be behind a Passat with a W8. I had no idea.

I've an '06 V6.
I'm cool too... ?
![]() 02/12/2014 at 23:13 |

How did you miss that?
![]() 02/12/2014 at 23:16 |

You say that.
Speak to an owner. Speak to the guy I saw in traffic, bumper to bumper, who told me the tale of his previous Phaeton as he was driving one at the time. A W12 that needed work, something simple like a belt or what have you, and it required removing the entire front end and the top end too. He said something along the lines of twelve grand.
So he let it go and got a W8, which is what he was driving alongside my Mustang. I asked if this one was as expensive and he said, cheaper to buy and more expensive in every way.
The car is a masterpiece of engineering. That means that when shit goes bad, you go broke. No joke.
Gotta consider the realities of a car like the Phaeton, especially when comparing it to something like a Mustang.
A Phaeton now is the cheapest best luxury car you can't afford to run. That's what they say, anyway.

Only 8 and 12 in America

Those things are great sleepers, but reliability is shit and when something inevitably goes wrong, its a huge repair bill. The auto versions couldn't really handle the power and would often need a $2-4000 repair every 60,000 miles. I've been tempted many a time, but sense has gotten the best of me.
![]() 02/12/2014 at 23:20 |

I literally just offered the same in reply to another Oppo under this subject regarding the Phaeton when stating that he'd take a Phaeton over any Mustang out there - you gotta consider the realities of a car like this, or like that.

I drove one on a chance encounter and met a guy in traffic who'd owned two. Not so unicorn?

So itsgot some of the same things mine has.
I have CAI w/Bamma Tune, Ford Racing True Dual Exhaust and thats it. and I must say loading a baby in the back of a stang will make other dads jelly
![]() 02/13/2014 at 01:01 |

It's a high point. Huh, basically everything you've done is what I'd planned to do with mine. Baby changes that, and financial priorities change.
Have you done anything else?
Plus what you've got under and back of the hood, I want to throw springs on mine, tires and wheels, wing delete and rear louver, sequential tail light harness, delete the door bumpers, billet grille (replacement), decklid delete...
![]() 02/13/2014 at 01:05 |

thats mine the camera makes it looks like its got halogens though those wheels are off a 06 GT and here is the front and rear and its got stock suspension cause its gonna be the trade in on the Mach 1 but seeing these pics...I dunno...I know I can't have it all but damn

5spd? Say it's a stick. Please.
![]() 02/13/2014 at 01:28 |

Well I guess thats where we differ, I can afford to run one. I don't choose to mind you, and I wouldn't own one as my only car or as a car I intended on daily driving, but at the end of the day, a broken Phaeton in my garage is still a magnificent car. A mustang on the other hand is just one of almost 10 million sold. Even a brand new 5.0 is only inherently valuable for its "performance" which will in 5 years be completely unremarkable. If I were to own a Phaeton, I'd work on it myself simply because I enjoy working on cars. I'm not saying you're wrong for preferring a mustang, nice things aren't for everyone, but the Phaeton, to me at least is the much better choice.
![]() 02/13/2014 at 02:04 |
|
Woah. Woah.
I don't prefer the Mustang. I do however prefer the Mustang for my lifestyle. If I were in the Phaeton bracket, while I still wouldn't select a Phaeton, I wouldn't say that I'd still prefer the Mustang. It's all relevant.
It's just been my experience that most people I've known who've thought the same, that they could afford to run one car or another, eventually ended up facing up to the realities of their situation and that seems to have included, anecdotally, a Phaeton owner.
I'm not saying it's not majestic, or even that it's less majestic than a Mustang, only that in this case that majesty comes with a huge, often invisible, associated cost. That's all. And I've been there, so I get it.
![]() 02/13/2014 at 03:54 |

You can pick these up with the W8 for about 20K now. And I've wanted one so badly for so long. If only I wasn't 19 and actually made decent money. I'd have a Phaeton to park next to my 68 Bug.

The only reason I worry about automatic 6's is that they were really popular as rentals. But I'm guessing (and hoping?) your's wasn't.

So many ex-rental auto's out there. And they've all got high miles and abused motors/trannys.
Good score. Happy to meet'cha.

Mach One, eh?
I nearly traded my '06 for a Mach 1 also. Here's it is (the owner had two at the time, one red one blue):
This was the one he was selling while his red beauty, supercharged, was his keeper. He sold it recently, I believe. (Also, please excuse the potato pic and shots - iPhone and not-wanting-to-show-plates-capture)
Oh, and for fun, here's my buddy Ron's with a custom (yeaaap) roof that I think is just fucking tits.
Although his was just a GT (with a super aggressive cam).

The fact that it was an auto killed the sale.
![]() 02/13/2014 at 22:41 |

Well honestly the 4 speed auto is the same tranny in the Marauder....and with an auto you are only .5sec slower then a stock terminator
![]() 02/13/2014 at 22:42 |
|
Yup, and it's completely not about any of that.
Heh.
![]() 02/13/2014 at 22:44 |
|
Was it a salvage title? Why didnt you decide to get it? Wife?
![]() 02/13/2014 at 22:50 |
|
Nope.
The finances were just outside what I was comfortable with, it had an auto which is a complete no-no for me, and I needed a daily driver - I'd hate myself for DD'ing that car given I don't even (then and at present) have a garage to store it in because covered parking, while better then uncovered, is still outside.
There were a bunch of reasons, though not enough that I don't occasionally lament passing. And it was an auto which, in case you haven't noticed yet, is a big deal breaker for me.

The depreciation is on French car levels though, if not for the fuel usage we might have gotten the V10 TDI instead of a V6 French car, the price was the same, the Pheaton had just run 80k km more (165k)
